UPI transactions are quite convenient. But they come with limitations. These limits might become an issue when you need to make a payment urgently.
UPI transactions have two types of limits:
- Number of transactions
- Transaction amount.
The limit on the transaction amount has two sub-limits:
- Maximum amount for a single transaction
- Maximum amount for transactions in a day.
It’s important to note that these limits can vary between different UPI apps and banks.
In the following sections, I’ll delve into the specifics of these UPI transaction limits, including variations among different UPI apps and banks.
Additionally, I’ll provide information about the limits imposed by various apps and banks. Keep in mind that while this list can be extensive due to the numerous banks, your primary concern should be understanding the limits set by your specific bank and UPI app.
Maximum Transaction Limit
The National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI) Manages the Whole UPI System. So, It has set some basic limits on UPI transactions. The limits set by the NPCI are applicable to all the banks and all the UPI Apps.
You can’t pay more than ₹1,00,000 in a day through the UPI System. Your transaction would be declined for ‘breaching the threshold’ limit if it crosses this limit.
What is ‘Per Day’ Limit
Here, ‘in a day’ means 24 hours. It means, when you try to pay some amount, the system checks all the transactions of the last 24 hours. In that time period, the limit of ₹1 lakh applies. Thus, this limit of ₹1, lakh may be applicable on two days.
Suppose, you pay ₹80,000 on 24 January at 5 PM. Again, tried to pay ₹50,000 on 25th Jan at 2 PM. Your second transaction would not go through as 24 hours have not elapsed. At that time you can only pay up to ₹20,000. For the fun transfer of 50 thousand, you have to wait until 5 PM. That would be the time when the 24-hour limit elapses.
The UPI Payment system is very easy. You have to enter only a 4-digit number for the fund transfer. But because of this ease, The system is not as secure as Internet Banking. Thus, to minimise fraud, the NPCI has set the maximum limit.

Limit on Number of Transactions
There is also a limit on the number of transactions. You can’t make more than 10 payments in 24 hours. The calculation of 24 hours is applicable as stated above.
The NPCI does not charge anything for the UPI Payment system. But, It requires resources for each of your transactions.
In a way, it subsidises your payment. However, It does not want to subsidise those unnecessary transactions which are done only to earn rewards. That is why it has put this limit. 10 transactions are reasonable enough
Higher Limit for Merchant Payments
The limit of 10 transactions in a day would not be reasonable if you use UPI for merchant payments. Often we use our UPI apps more than 10 times for pay to retail shops.
Thus this limit would be a major roadblock for a cashless economy. That is why the limit for merchant payments is different.
There is no limit on number of payments for the merchant transactions. You can use as many times as you wish.
However, there is a limit for the maximum transactions as it is related to fraud. But, the limit is higher than the P2P (peer-to-peer) fund transfer.
For merchant payment the maximum amount would be ₹2 lakh in 24 hours.
Similarly, there is no limit on the number of transactions for bill payment through the UPI apps.
UPI Limit for IPO and Government Bond
For IPO investment you may need a big amount for the payment. Thus NPCI has enhanced the limit to ₹5 lakhs per IPO transaction. You can refer to this circular.
Earlier the limit for IPO investment was ₹2 lakhs. However, this limit was insufficient if the investor wanted to invest in two IPOs on the same day. As you know retail investors can invest up to ₹2 lakhs in an IPO.
Similarly, the Limit for government bonds also increased. The UPI Limit for government bond investment through the RBI Retail Direct Scheme is ₹5 lakh per transaction.
Limit for New UPI Registration and App Installation
You would experience some very strict limits on some occasions. It happens when there is any suspected activity. The system itself decides which activity are suspected.
In this case, you may not transfer any amount. If this happens, you should wait for 24 hours. Such a limit goes away after 24 hours.
You can’t transfer more than ₹5000 within 24 hours of the following events.
- Installation or re-installation of UPI App.
- Changed Mobile Handset
- Set or Reset UPI PIN
- Changed Mobile Number
This special limit is also applicable for merchant Transaction.
Limits on Receiving UPI Payment
You can’t get unlimited UPI Payments in your bank account. The NPCI has also set a limit for that.
You can receive a maximum number of 25 credits in a bank account during a 24-hour period through the UPI mode. This limit is only for the Peer to Peer transactions, Not for the merchant payments.
Likewise, you can receive maximum ₹4 lakh in 24 hours block. This limit is also for P2P transactions.
However, if you are a merchant then there is no such restriction on receiving funds.
Limits on UPI Autopay
There is a restriction on Autopay if the amount crosses ₹15,000. The autopay does not require your intervention for recurring payments up to ₹15,000. But, above this amount, You would be required to enter the UPI PIN every time.
UPI system also gives you the facility of autopay for recurring payments. As you know there are some transactions which come every month. For example, you have to pay the same DTH, OTT and EMI payment every month. Every time you had to go through the process of payment.
The UPI Autopay has eased this process. Now you can set an autopay mandate for such recurring transactions. After setting the autopay, you need not worry about further payments. It would be done automatically.
Limits Set by the Banks
So the limit set by the NPCI is applicable to all the UPI users. No user can breach it irrespective of the bank and UPI app.
But, the banks can set their own sub-limit under the NPCI limit. They can do this to add more security for their customers. So, some banks used their powers and set a lower limit for their customers.
Note, that the limits set by the Banks are applicable to a bank account irrespective of the Apps. So, if you reach the limit of a bank account, you can use another bank account linked in the same app.
However, lately, NPCI has advised all the banks to bring uniformity. Subsequently, all the big banks have waived their limits and they follow the limits set by the NPCI.
UPI Limits of SBI
The State Bank of India is very liberal with the UPI Transfer. It endorsed the limit set by the NPCI
Thus the Upper limit for maximum transaction is ₹1 lakh in 24 hours.
Maximum 10 Peer to Peer Transaction is permitted in 24 hours.
If you want to know about the weekly or monthly limit, let me tell you that there is no such limit for the SBI.
So SBI Bank Customers should not worry about any extra limit by their bank.
ICICI Bank
The ICICI Bank used to have a very low limit for UPI Transactions. But now it also follows the NPCI limit. It means you can send up to ₹1 lakh in 24 hours.
HDFC Bank
The HDFC permits up to ₹1 lakh per transaction. The limit is the same for daily transactions. In fact, it is following the NPCI.
I have listed the UPI transaction limit of all the banks that use the UPI payment system for fund transfers. There are 142 such banks. The list is given at the end of the post.
UPI Limits Set By the Apps
The Apps can also set their limits. They have the power to do so. However, the most popular apps do not set any sub-limit. They just follow the limits set by the NPCI.
The Limits set by the Apps are applicable to all the listed bank accounts.
UPI Transaction Limit of Google Pay
Google Pay doesn’t have a limit of its own. Thus, the Limit set by the NPCI is applicable to this app as well.
UPI Limits of Phonepe
Like Google Pay, Phonepe also does not check your transactions. You can transfer as much amount as permitted by the NPCI. There is no restriction on the number of payments towards Phonepe.
However, because of the NPCI limit, you can’t transfer more than ₹1 lakh in 24 hours. Also, you can’t transfer more than 10 times in 24 hours. All these restrictions are for the Peer-to-peer fund transfer.
Paytm UPI Limit
Like Phonepe and Google Pay, Paytm also permits up to ₹1 lakh for a single transaction. You can’t pay more than ₹1 lakh in 24 hours.
But this app has some special limits as well. It has also a limit for hourly transactions.

Transaction Limit of BHIM App
It is one of the best and oldest UPI apps for money transfers. Earlier it has strict limits but now it follows the NPCI limit.
The daily limit of the BHIM app is ₹1,00,000. The per transaction limit is also ₹1,00,000. This limit is applicable to every bank account linked to the BHIM app.
Other causes for No Transactions
Many People complain that the UPI System does not permit a transaction despite being within the limit. There can be many reasons for that.
- There is a strict limit of ₹5000 if you change your mobile handset, mobile number or UPI PIN. This strict limit is applicable for initial 24 hours.
- You are using the Jan Dhan Account or Small Savings account. These accounts have their own limit of withdrawal. Thus many banks restrict transactions after the limit of a bank account. However, Some banks like SBI charge an extra amount after the 4th withdrawal in a month.
- If the system senses any suspicious activity, it will stop all the transactions. It is done for the safety of your money.
- Check whether you are using an account that has enough balance.
- People often, don’t calculate the 24-hour period. Whereas, every time you try to send money the system checks all the transactions of the last 24 hours.

Limit on Request
Now there is a limit on using the money request feature of the UPI. Because of the prevalent fraud, the NPCI has instructed to keep a strict limit on the Collect feature of the UPI.
As of now for any Peer to Peer Transaction the collect request has a limit of ₹2,000.
The limit is very low. But it has become very necessary after the instances of fraud. By using this facility the fraudsters have cheated many people. Now, this type of cheating is at least limited to ₹2,000.
