Full Form of UPI ID? What is UPI ID?
The UPI ID is made up of two terms. UPI and ID. The full form of UPI is Unified Payment Service and the full form of ID is Identification.
Actually, friends! whenever you use a UPI app, it gives you a unique identity. It is similar to the email address. As you get a unique email address after the registration, The UPI App also gives you a UPI ID after the registration.
Every app links the UPI ID with your bank account. That is why the UPI ID can be used to get money in your bank account.
In a way, it is the virtual address of your bank account. And that’s why the UPI ID is also called virtual payment address or VPA.
How UPI ID is very useful?
Friends, as you know, UPI apps are the best if you have to make cashless payments. These apps transfer money instantly.
But, These apps require UPI ID for the money transfer. Only after the creation of UPI ID, you can use the UPI Apps. But surprisingly, you may not aware of your UPI ID even after making payments. It happens because your app uses UPI ID in the background.

Which UPI ID Should You Enter?
Friends, UPI ID is similar to the email ID. But, It may not be that easy to remember. If you use multiple UPI Apps, you would also have multiple UPI ID. As every UPI App creates at least one UPI ID for you.
Paytm, Phonepe, Google Pay and all other UPI Apps create their own UPI ID. But, you should not worry about the money because all of the UPI IDs are linked to your bank account only.
Suppose, you want to pay for online shopping and you have chosen the UPI Payment method. Now you have to enter the UPI ID. This UPI ID can be from Amazon pay, or google pay or from any other app.
You have to pick ID from the app through which you want to complete the transaction. Suppose, you enter the UPI ID from the Google Pay. Then the Google Pay would notify you for the payment request.
So, You would have to open Google Pay to complete the transaction. Only Google Pay would maintain a record and give the required customer service for that payment request. This transaction would not be a concern of Phonepe or any other app.
So if you have to enter UPI ID for online shopping, then fill in the ID of the same app through which you want to conduct the transaction.
How to Find Out Your UPI ID?

How to find UPI ID in Phonepe?
PhonePe users have to tap on their profile picture in the top left corner in the app homepage. In the next page, you will see a link to BHIM UPI ID. After tapping on it, you will reach the page with the UPI ID.
In this page you will see your UPI ID. If you wish, you can also create a different UPI ID for each account.
How to find UPI ID in Paytm?
In Paytm also you have to tap on your profile picture in the top left corner. In the next page, you have to tap on the money transfer setting. After this, in the page that opens, you will see your UPI ID.
How to find UPI ID in Amazon Pay?
In Amazon, you have to go to the Amazon Pay page via the menu. There you will see the UPI card on Amazon. Tapping on it will open the page that shows UPI ID.
How to find UPI ID in Google Pay?
In Google Pay as soon as you tap on your profile picture, in the next page you will get your UPI ID. It will be written under your mobile number.
Shortcut to Find UPI ID
Instead of opening the app and browsing for the UPI ID, you can just think and enter your UPI ID. It is very easy to figure out your UPI ID. You can do if you pay attention to the format of UPI ID.
Understanding UPI ID Format
So let’s first understand what is the format of UPI ID. Like email ID, every UPI ID has three parts.
- The first part is UPI ID is different to every person. It would be a unique term.
- While the second part is just a symbol of @ (at the rate). It is same for every UPI ID.
- The third part depends on which app you are using. For example, if the UPI ID is created in PhonePe, the third part would be ‘ybl‘.
Use Pattern to Know your UPI ID
Now due to the fixed format, all the UPI ID of Phonepe would have ‘@ybl’. Similarly, @paytm is used in all the UPI ID created by Paytm. The Amazon pay uses the suffix of #apl. The case of Google Pay is a bit different. We will tell you about it further.
Friends, now the question arises what is the first part of your UPI ID. The answer is simple. Most of the UPI apps use your mobile number for the first part of the UPI ID.
It means, if your mobile number is abc then your UPI ID will be abc@ybl in PhonePe. Similarly in Paytm, your UPI ID will be abc@paytm. It will be abc@apl on Amazon Pay.
Similarly, You can find UPI ID for any other app. Only, Google Pay have a somewhat different format. Here, the mobile number is not used to create UPI ID. Instead, the first part of your Gmail ID is used.
Apart from this, the last part of Google Pay is also not fixed. Rather, it has four options to choose.
Actually, Google Pay uses four banks to provide UPI service. Therefore, different terms are used for all four banks. These are okicici, okhdfc, oksbi and okaxis. Your UPI ID can contain any of these terms as the suffix
By the way, you do not have to worry about the UPI ID. Because when you enter the UPI ID, the system will verify it. After the verification, it will tell the full name immediately.
How to use UPI ID in different situations?
You might have made payments without using the UPI ID. But, It can be used for any type of UPI payment. Let us understand the correct way to use the UPI ID.
Use of UPI ID for Offline Merchant Payment
It is true that, UPI ID is not required for the direct payment. Even when you pay to shopkeeper there is no need of UPI ID. You make payment only by scanning the QR code.
But Friends, do you know the QR code itself contains the UPI ID of the merchant. It is written in coded language. Only your app can read it.
For your convenience, it is also written in a human-readable format. You can find it along with the QR code. often, It is written beneath the QR code.

Even you can enter this UPI ID instead of scanning the QR code, in case there is difficulty in scanning. The money would go to the same merchant.
UPI ID for Online Merchant Payment
You have to enter your UPI ID for the online payment. Unlike to physical payment, the online merchant asks money from you. In response to the money request, you have to only approve the amount. Whereas, in the physical payment you send money to the merchant by scanning the QR code.
The online merchant asks your UPI ID to request for the payment. When you enter your UPI ID, the merchant sends a request to the corresponding UPI App.
As your app receives the request, It notifies you. By tapping on the notification, you reach to the pending payment page. In that page, you can approve the payment. In the final step, you have to enter your UPI PIN for the authentication. With this the UPI Payment completes.
Using UPI ID for payment to Friends and Relative
Normally, you don’t need UPI ID for payment to your friends and family. As the mobile number or bank account number does the job. But, the mobile number would not work if the beneficiary does not use the same UPI App. Also, You may not know the bank account number of the beneficiary.
In such situation, you can use UPI ID, instead. Even you can guess the UPI ID of beneficiary by using the contact number. It would be verified immdiately.
To make payment, you have to only enter the UPI ID in place of contact number. Tap on the verify, the system would show the full name of the beneficary. Verify it and enter the amount as well. The payment completes as you enter the UPI PIN.
Request Money using UPI ID
If you want money from someone, then instead of telling him your bank account number, you can tell UPI ID. By using this method, you would get money in your bank account without sharing the bank details.
Not only this, You can directly ask money through the UPI App. The UPI have a feature to request money.
To use this feature you should know the UPI ID of the payer. By using the UPI ID of the Payer, you send a money request. The payer would get the notification about the pending payment. He/she can approve the payment immediately.
