By Sumit Varma | Published On February 28, 2020

UPI, Unified Payment Interface is the most popular payment system of India. It has reduced the usage of Internet Banking. Those who are still not using internet banking, the UPI system has also added them in the world of cashless payment. So, now, Everyone is saying #upichalega.

In this post, I will tell you what is this and how you can use this payment system.

What is UPI

Before proceeding to our main topic, it is necessary to get to know about the UPI payment system.

Though we use the NEFT, RTGS, IMPS facilities for the fund transfer. But if you use the UPI, you will believe it is the best. Like other payment systems, it gives you a platform for instant payment directly from your bank account.

It works through the mobile app and connects with your bank account. So, you have to download a UPI enabled app to use this system. You can also use this system in your feature phone by using the USSD codes.

UPI Chalega

In 2019, there was 10 billion UPI transaction in the whole country. And only in January 2020, it has gone up to 1.3 billion transactions worth ₹2.16 trillion. But still, there are most of the Indian citizens who are not using this easy and fast payment facility.

That’s why the NPCI (National Payment Corporation of India) is launching its new campaign ‘UPI Chalega’. As you know NPCI is a governing body of UPI. In August 2016, NPCI has developed UPI to promote digital payment system.

NPCI has succeeded in its goal to a large extent. But still, there is a lot of work is left in this regard. So, NPCI has included different banks in its campaign ‘UPI Chalega’. Moreover, some Payment Service Providers and Third Party Apps are also contributing to this campaign.

How to Use UPI App

NPCI is providing the UPI facility through its own mobile app, BHIM. But you may use any other UPI enabled app as well. Like Paytm, Phonepe, Google Pay, Bharat Pay, SBI Pay etc. So, firstly you have to download any of the apps on your mobile from Play Store or App Store. Now follow the steps.

Registration

To register with the UPI app, you have to focus on some pre requisites. These are-

  • You can link only your bank account with the UPI App. Thus, you may not link your wallets to UPI.
  • The mobile number registered with the bank account should be present your smartphone. It must also have money to send the SMS.
  • Suppose you have two SIM in your mobile. You should link the app with that SIM which is already registered with your bank account. Otherwise, the UPI platform will not validate the bank account.

It seems you have downloaded the UPI App. Now to register with the app, you have to follow some steps-

  1. Open the app
  2. Select the preferred language
  3. Select the SIM number i.e. mobile number
  4. The system will send you an SMS from your registered SIM. It verifies your given mobile number.
  5. On the basis of mobile number, the system fetches your bank accounts.
  6. Now select your bank name from the drop down list of banks
  7. Again the system will fetch your account number after selecting the bank name
  8. If you have more than one accounts in a bank, select the one account number. Your account is now linked with the app.
  9. You may add multiple accounts with the UPI app. But the first account will be the default account.
  10. Thus the UPI registration completed.

Set the UPI PIN

Now next step is to set the UPI PIN (UPI Personal Identification Number). It is just like the ATM PIN with 4-6 digit numeric code. UPI PIN is compulsory to authenticate and proceed with the transaction. Also, it secures your transaction on the UPI App because the payment directly goes from your bank account.

  • The app itself gives you the facility of setting UPI PIN.
  • You have to set it during the first time registration with UPI app.
  • To set the PIN, enter the last six digits of your debit card number and expiry date of the card.
  • For the authentication, you will receive an OTP. Enter the OTP received.
  • After successful verification, the app will ask you to set the UPI PIN.
  • Enter the digits of your choice. Confirm it again entering.
  • Now your UPI PIN is generated.
  • UPI PIN is required to make a payment, not for accepting payment. So, be cautious if someone asks you to enter the PIN to accept payment.
  • You should always enter the PIN only on your phone and the UPI PIN page of a UPI enabled App.
  • Also never share your UPI PIN and card details with anyone. Otherwise one can access your bank account.

Generating the UPI ID

UPI ID is your identity. It is just like an address. That’s why it has another name Virtual Payment Address. Through this ID one can verify you to make payment. Also, it may be used to make payment by you. Then there will be no requirement of entering or giving the bank account details for the transactions.

However, you may pay also to the beneficiary if he has no UPI ID. This is possible to make payment after getting the account number and IFSC of the beneficiary. UPI app gives this facility as well.

A person sends you the payment in your UPI ID but you receive the money directly in your account. Most of the UPI Apps automatically generate the UPI ID. Generally, it consists of your mobile number with the suffix of UPI App name. You can see it here-
