How To Deactivate or Unlink Your Bank Account from UPI App

By Chandrakant Mishra | Published On February 12, 2020

Sometimes, You don’t want to use your Bank account in the UPI app. If so, you can easily Unlink the account. All the UPI apps give you the option to delink a bank account. Once a bank account is removed from the app, you would not be able to send money through that account.

The apps can use deactivate, unlink, disable, deregister or remove words to disable a bank account from the UPI app.

Remove a Bank Account From the UPI App

No matter, your account is in which bank. If you have already enabled UPI for your bank account, you may unlink your account from the UPI app.

As you know there are many UPI apps and you may link your account in each and every app. Thus, you can also unlink the account from any of the UPI app.

To tell you the process of Account removal, I have taken example of two UPI apps. The same process is also used for other apps.

Note, if you do not want to use the UPI facility for a bank account, you have to unlink the account from each of the UPI where it is linked. If required, you can also unregister the UPI app. It is possible.

Removal of bank account from one app, would not remove it from other UPI apps. You can use same bank account in other UPI apps.

Deactivation of UPI Through the Branch

If you don’t want to use a bank account for the UPI Services altogether, you can also do it from the bank side. You can ask your bank to deactivate the UPI facility from your account. You can do it by going to your bank’s home branch.

Thus to close the UPI service on your linked bank account, go to the home branch of your bank. Then make a request there to deactivate the UPI service from your account permanently. Once your request is processed by the bank, UPI facility will be deactivated from your account. Subsequently, You would not able to use this bank account in any of the UPI App.

Note:- You can also deactivate the UPI service through the Net Banking if you have a SBI Bank account.

Thus let us see the Unlinking process in BHIM UPI App and Paytm App.

Unlink a Bank Account From BHIM UPI App

If you do not want to use the BHIM app, You can de-register it. However, you can also delete the saved account from the app. Then there will be no requirement of deregistering the UPI. I am telling you both. Have a look-

Deregister BHIM app

Firstly open the BHIM UPI App with the passcode and follow the steps-

Step 1, Tap on Profile option on the home page.

Step 2, The next page is My Profile page. Tap on three vertical dots at the top right corner of the profile page.

Step 3, Thus you enter in the Settings. Now again tap on the vertical dots.

Step 4, Click on the Deregister option. As you can see there is only one option.

Step 5, A message displays at the screen. It is confirming from you to deregister from BHIM. Click on Proceed button. After clicking you will deregister from both BHIM application and *99# service.

Thus you have successfully deregistered Your bank account from the BHIM App. Now you can not use the UPI service any more.

But you can again link UPI with your account in BHIM app, whenever you want. However, you have to create a new UPI ID for your account. Also, you may not fetch the earlier transaction details of the old UPI ID.

Remove the Default Bank Account

Apart from the Deregister, you can remove your saved accounts in BHIM UPI App as well. If you have saved more than one account, first is the Default account. And the rest accounts are secondary.

Tap on Bank Account option on the home page. Here you can see your all linked bank accounts. The primary or default account is on the top. Other accounts are below it.

Thus, if you want to delete your default account, firstly you have to remove default tag on it. In other words, you have to set any other account as default. Then your present default account will become a secondary account.

Look at the below image where I am setting my second account as default.

Tap on Make Default option below the account detail.

Then press on CONFIRM button. Now your default account is successfully changed. You can see it again press on Bank Account option on the home page.

Now you can delete account from the BHIM App by pressing on Remove button.

Click on Proceed. You have deleted your account.

Now you can not use your account for the UPI transaction.

Remove the Secondary Account

To delete the secondary account is a simple process. You can remove your secondary account easily because it is not a default account. Thus only tap on Remove button. And your bank account will be deleted.

Note:- If you want to Change or Reset the UPI PIN only, you may do it without deregistering the UPI or deleting the bank account. As you can see in the above image, there are both the options.

Deactivation in Paytm App

Now, look at the deactivation process of UPI from the bank account in the Paytm App.

You can Deregister your UPI Profile permanently in the Paytm app with more ease. With just a single click, you can delete the UPI profile for all bank accounts.

Unlink the UPI Through the Deregister of Profile

Let us see how you can unlink the UPI in Paytm App-

Open the Paytm app. Tap on UPI option on the dashboard.

In this page, you can see your BHIM UPI ID followed by @paytm and your primary account along with Saved Bank Accounts.

Now tap on three vertical dots at the top right corner. Select the Deregister UPI Profile option.

A message pop up with a warning that you would not be able to send or receive money after deregistering the UPI ID. Click on OK.

Thus you have successfully deregistered the UPI profile. In this way, you have also unlinked the UPI from the bank account.

However, you may again link your bank account with the UPI App. But you would have to create a new UPI profile. And you would not be able to retrieve the earlier transactions.

Delete Only Bank Account

But if you want to delete only the bank account from UPI temporarily, you can. Thus there is no need to convert the default account into the secondary account as in BHIM UPI.

Tap on the account which you want to delete. Here you can see the Remove Bank option. Tap on remove and press on OK. You have successfully removed the bank account.

Whenever you want, you may add your account again without any verification or change in UPI address.

Change or Reset the UPI Address

If you want to Edit UPI ID, no need to deregister the UPI Profile. Click on three vertical dots.

Now tap on Edit UPI ID. Here you may create a new UPI ID for your account.
