Lots of changes are going on in the Phonepe UPI IDs. Now, it gives you the option to choose IDs from other banks as well. Previously, you can only use the UPI ID with the suffix of YBL only. Now you can even allot separate IDs for each linked bank accounts.

What is UPI ID in Phonepe App?
UPI ID or VPA is an integral part of the UPI Payment system. Every user of the UPI Apps gets a unique UPI ID at the time of registration.
In the UPI Apps, the money transfer takes place on the basis of this ID. No two person can have the same ID. That is why it can be used instead of the bank account number. Yes, the UPI Apps, uses UPI ID for making a payment in place of the bank account number.
The full form of the UPI ID is – Unified Payment Intereface identification.
The full form of theVPA is – Virtual payment address.
UPI ID and VPA refer to same thing. You should not confuse it.
The Format of UPI ID – Prefix and Extension
The UPI ID is similar to the Email ID. It has three parts.
- Prefix
- Static symbol
- Suffix
These three parts together make a unique ID for you. The second part that is the symbol of ‘at the rate’ @ remain the same in each and every ID. It is just like the email ID.
The suffix part can be different for different people. It depends upon the UPI app and servicing bank.
Phonepe used to take services of Yes bank for its UPI operations. That is why it has used suffix (extension) YBL. The YBL Stands for the Yes Bank Limited.
However, after an issue, now phonepe takes services of other banks as well. It can have the following suffixes as well.
- ibl – by ICICI Bank
- axl – by Axis Bank
Still most of the people are using the YBL suffix from Yes Bank.
How to find UPI ID in Phonepe?
Often people don’t remember their UPI ID. As they don’t use it very frequently. Also, most of the UPI Payments happens through QR codes.
But, it is used in online payment. If you choose the UPI Mode of payment, you have to enter this ID.
In the Phonepe, you can find your ID in the profile section. To reach there, tap on your picture. If you have not uploaded the picture you would see the blank icon at the top left corner.

Now there would be your profile section. In this section, you would see a link for your UPI ID. Tap on that.

The next page contains all of your IDs. The Phonepe gives you the option to make different IDs for different bank accounts. So if you have many bank accounts, you would see IDs linked to each bank accounts.

In the phonepe, you can get UPI IDs powered by the Yes Bank, ICICI Bank, and Axis Bank. So you have plenty of options. I would tell you further the method to make multiple UPI IDs.
Thus, on this page, you can find out your UPI ID. You can pick the ID for making online payments. You would also see an ID that contains your mobile number. For most people, this ID would be more convenient. It is easy to remember the ID which has your mobile number.
How to Create or change UPI IDs?
The phonepe gives you an option to create or change the UPI ID of your choice. Even you can have multiple IDs for the same bank account.
You may be wondering about the need for multiple IDs for the same bank account. I would discuss it further in the article.
So, if you want to change UPI ID for a bank account, you have to reach the My Money page.

On the My Money page, tap on the Bank accounts. You will find it under ‘Payments’ section.

On the bank accounts page, you would find all of your linked bank accounts. Along with the VPA, you can also change UPI PIN through this page.
Now choose the bank account for which you want to change the ID.

Now you would reach the page for the particular bank account. You would see your existing VPA on this page.
Besides that, you would also see some of the suggested IDs powered by ICICI BANK and Axis Bank. You can activate any of that.

But, if you wish, you can create your own UPI ID. You would find three ways to create it. These ways are marked with the Plus sign.
- The first way would create the UPI ID or VPA powered by the Axis bank. It would have the suffix of @axl.
- The second way would create a VPA powered by the ICICI Bank. It would have the suffix of @ibl.
- The Third way would create the VPA powered by Yes Bank Limited. It would have the suffix of @ybl.
As you tap on the Plus sign, you would reach a page for creating a new ID. You can type your own ID here on this page. The system would instantly check whether the desired ID is available or not.
You can also choose a VPA from the list of suggestions. Finally, tap on the ‘Create’ Button.


Before, creating your new UPI ID, the system would validate your mobile number. An SMS would be sent from your mobile to the UPI Payment system.

After the successful verification, the new ID would be allotted to you.

How To Pay using UPI ID in Phonpe?
The UPI IDs or VPA can be used both to pay another person and approve the payment as well.
You can easily pay your friend or family if you know his or her VPA. Often it would contain the mobile number. Thus, you can also use the trial and error method to find out the UPI ID of another person.
Nevertheless, if you know the ID, It becomes very easy. Open your Phonepe app and tap on ‘ To Account‘ under the Transfer Money section.

Now Enter the ID of the payee in the given section. Tap on the New UPI ID.

There would be a window to verify it. Tap on the verify.

Now you can see the actual bank account name of that UPI ID. Thus you can verify whether you are paying to the right person or not. Even you can further verify it by paying only ₹1.

On the coming page, you have to enter the amount. You can also choose one of your accounts if you have linked multiple accounts. Tap on the Send button.

On the next page, you have to enter the UPI PIN of your bank account. As you enter the correct UPI PIN, the money instantly gets transferred. If you have forgotten your UPI PIN, you can also easily reset it. Note, you can’t revoke your money transfer order as money transfers instantly.

Important Tips
- While creating a new VPA, you should keep it simple. It should be easy to remember. It is not feasible to check your Phonepe app every time for the ID.
- If you have multiple bank accounts, It is better to allot different UPI ID for a different account. Thus, you can decide on the bank account by using the respective UPI IDs. Suppose, You have bank accounts in SBI and ICICI Bank. You can keep UPI ID as abc.sbi@ybl and abc.icici@ybl.
