Pay Traffic E-Challan Online in UP

What is E- Challan?

Before starting about the procedure to pay e-challan, we must know some important facts. As it is important to know the e-challan system thoroughly.

Unlike the challan at the spot, E-Challan is an electronically generated challan. Thus E-Challan stands for ‘Electronic Challan’. The traffic police generate it with the help of electronic challan system. And sends it to the traffic rule defaulter at his home address.

Moreover, you also receive an SMS of an e-challan notice on your mobile.

Earlier there was only one option to pay the challan. That was directly visiting through the office of the Traffic Police Lines.

But after the launching of e- challan system, you get one more option i.e. online Payment. Thus now you can pay the e-challan offline at the office as well as online through the website.

A Government Initiative

E-Challan, a digital payment of challan is an initiative of the Government of India. It is under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). Basically, it is for the penalties on the breach of the traffic rules.

The Ministry has amended the regulations of Motor Vehicle (MV) Act 1988 in September 2019. Thus according to the new MV Act 2019, the government has increased the fine many times. So, beware of the violation of the traffic rules now.

Offences for Which You Would have to Pay E-Challan

Here is a long list of the traffic offences for which you might receive e-challan notice. Some of them which occur frequently are-

  • Neither physical nor electronic documents with you at the time of riding
  • Wrong or dangerous parking on the roadside
  • Over Speeding
  • Red Light Jumping
  • Over Loading
  • More than two persons on the two wheeler
  • Driving without a seat belt or helmet
  • Using the mobile phone while driving etc.

So just keep away yourself from the above violations.

Online Payment of Traffic E-Challan

You must pay the challan within 60 days from the date of issue of the notice of e- challan.

If you fail, you may also get a notice from the court. Further, you may be charged with additional fine or imprisonment or both. Thus do not take the e-challan notice lightly .

You may pay online e- challan by the two methods- Through the Central Website and through the State Website of UP Traffic Police.

However, when you visit the state government website, it directs you to the Central government website for the payment. Have a look at the two procedures-.

Through Central Website

Follow some easy steps to pay e- challan through the Central government Website-

Visit the website echallan.parivahan.gov.in. You reach on the home page of E-Challan – Digital Traffic/Transport Enforcement Solution. If you have already a Username, enter the username and click on Next. Otherwise, tap on Check Challan Status tab.

Here I want to tell you one more thing. To pay e-challan, firstly you would have to click on Check Challan Status tab. Because only then you can see the Challan details for which you are liable to pay. Thus in this way you can also check the e-challan notices online.

Step 2 – Challan Details Page

Step 3 – Check the E-Challan Status

On the next page, you can see all e-challan status below the screen. You can also view the Total number of Challans against you.

Thus if you want to get only the information of e- challans against you, this is the last step for you. No need to proceed further. But if you want to pay for an e-challan, go for steps 4 and 5.

If there is no challan pending against you, a window will open with Challan Not Found message.

Step 4 – Select the Challan for Payment

But if you select the Net Banking option, select the bank name through which you want to pay. Follow the instructions for the usual payment process using Net Banking. Thus in this way, the online payment of e- challan is successfully completed.

In addition, you get a confirmation message on your mobile along with the transaction ID as well. Save this transaction ID for future reference.

Through State Website

If you want to go through the Uttar Pradesh state government website, you may. Then no need to go through the office of the Traffic Police. Look at the steps-

Step 1 – Visit the UP Police Site

Visit the official website of UP traffic police, traffic.uppolice.gov.in. On the home page, you may see a Welcome Page. Select your district and tap on GO.

Step 2 – Select the Option My Driving Challan

Scroll down a little. You may see the option of My Driving Challan under the Traffic Police Services heading. Now tap on My Driving Challan option.

Step 3 – Challan Details Page

Just you tap on that option, the website directs you to the central website echallan.parivahan.gov.in. Thus you reach on the Challan Details page. It is the very page you had visited through the Central website in Step2.

So, the further procedure is the same as above from Step 2 to Step 5. Moreover, you can view the status of e-challans only or can make a payment also as above.

Hence to check and payment of e-challan, you would have to visit the Central website ultimately. So in this way you can pay online e- challan through the state website as well.

Different Modes of Payment of E- Challan

Currently, you can pay e- challan in three modes through the official website-

  1. Debit Card
  2. Credit Card and
  3. Net Banking

Moreover, if you have Paytm App in your mobile then you may pay through the Paytm as well.

The Documents You Must have While Driving

Thus if you do not want to become a traffic rule defaulter, follow the traffic rules properly. Moreover, you must have some important documents with you when you are driving. These are-

  • Driving License (DL)
  • Registration Certification (RC)
  • Vehicle Insurance Paper
