Cash Mode is the most talked feature of Google Tez app. And it is perhaps the best feature too. Because it lets you make payments in only a couple of taps. All other things on the app are almost the same as other UPI apps. But cash mode is what makes Tez a unique UPI app. But do you know how it works and how to use it to make payments?
In this post, I am going to tell you everything about cash mode feature of Google Tez. I will also tell you how good is the cash mode feature along with steps to use it.
What is Cash Mode on Google Tez?
Cash Mode is a payment feature on Google Tez app. This feature lets you transfer money without entering any detail of the beneficiary. It works when payer and recipient both present at the same place. You can use it to pay at shops, give some money to your friend who is with you.
In cash mode, both phones connect with each other wirelessly. Since it is Tez app’s exclusive feature, it works only when you and the recipient both have Tez app.
This cash mode feature of Tez is more capable of replacing cash payments than others UPI apps. Because it is just instant. You don’t need to ask UPI ID, mobile number or account details to make payments. You just need to keep your phone beside the recipient’s phone. Both the phone would talk to each other and make a connection. Isn’t it interesting?
But how is it possible? Let’s understand.
How does Cash Mode work?
Google has introduced its Audio QR technology with Tez app. In Audio QR, one device communicates with other using audio signals. And this is the same case with Tez app. When you use cash mode, the device transmits ultrasound signals using the speaker. And the another device receives and reads these signals to identify the sender of these signals.

Cash Mode feature of Google Tez is one of the easiest payment modes. You don’t have to follow a bunch of steps or dig around app’s feature to use it. Instead, you can just launch the cash mode right from the home screen.
The app has a big white button right in the middle of the app’s home screen. And that is the button for Cash Mode. You can swipe up for paying or down for receiving payments. First of all, you need to download, activate and add your bank account in Google Tez app. After that, you will be able to use cash mode of Google Tez app.

- Now swipe up the big white button at the middle that has Tez logo on it.
- Tell the recipient to swipe down the same button on his/her phone.
- After swiping, wait for 5-10 seconds until your phone reads the signals transmitted by recipient’s phone.

Receive payments using cash mode
You don’t have to do much to receive payments in cash mode. Just swipe the cash mode button down when the payer says. And then, your phone will transmit the audio signals and payer’s phone will read them. Meanwhile, you only need to wait for 10-20 seconds. And the money will be transferred to your account instantly.
The payer may ask your Google account name to confirm the account. Tell him/her your account name. When you receive the payment, the app will take you out of the cash mode automatically. You may also receive a notification about the payment completion.
Is Tez’s Cash Mode really ‘Tez’?
Tez, a Hindi word, means fast in English. And quite a few of you may have a question. Is it really ‘Tez’?
In my opinion, it is not that fast like it supposed to be. The feature is great and works nicely most of the time. But since the app is by Google, the expectations were higher.
The main problem of Cash Mode is its audio transmission and reading those transmissions. If you are at a noisy place, then your device may face difficulties in receiving signals. Some users already complained about this issue on the play store.
Even after calibrating the microphone, the app was unable to receive signals. And when we talk about Indian markets, they are always noisy. Hence Google should take some steps soon to resolve it.
Tez App has some more flaws
It seems like Google was in a hurry while launching the app. Perhaps, it is because the app got leaked by Indian finance ministry and Google went on covering it. But, when you are Google, you are not supposed to be faulty. Not just cash mode, some other features also have flaws.
For instance, when I was adding my bank account, I had to generate OTP three times. Some other users also complained about this issue. And that is why the rating of the app got down to 3.7 from more than 4 in just a couple of days.
However, Google is saying that it has solved some issues with the latest update. And if it is true, Google Tez will surely encourage more people to make digital payments. The battle between Tez and BHIM would be interesting.
