How To Get UPI PIN Without Debit Card?

By Chandrakant Mishra | Published On March 23, 2020

As you know UPI PIN is a four or six digit number which you have to set during the linking of the bank account with the UPI App. To set the UPI PIN you have to proceed with your debit card details.

But sometimes people do not want to use their debit card details Or some people don’t have any debit card with them, but they want to use the UPI services. What are the options. I have tried many alternative methods and got the solution as well. I hope my experience would help you.

How to Get UPI PIN without Debit card

1. Contacted the Bank Branch to Get UPI PIN Without the Debit card

I contacted my bank branch and cleared my problem with the executive. I told him that I want to use the UPI facility but do not want to use my debit card details to get the UPI PIN. How is it possible?

The executive told me that at present it is not possible to get the UPI PIN without using the debit card. So if you have not a debit card, you can not use the useful services of UPI.

2. Went Through the Help Section of the UPI App

Then I visited the FAQ’s section of my UPI App to get the appropriate answer. Let us see how I did-

Step 1, I opened BHIM UPI APP. Then I clicked on the three horizontal lines at the top right corner of the home page.

Step 2, And selected the FAQs option. The app takes me to the BHIM UPI FAQs section.

Step 3, Here I searched the hot issue, How to set UPI PIN.

Then I get to know again that, to set or reset the UPI PIN only debit card is the option. And this card must be linked with your that bank account which you are linking with the app.

3. Contacted the Customer Care of UPI App

Also, I called to the customer care of my Google Pay UPI App. I explained to him the same issue.

He answered me- ‘UPI PIN is necessary to authenticate the transactions done on UPI platform i.e. UPI Apps or *99# service. It keeps secure your fund transfer from any fraud. So you can not do any transaction without entering the UPI PIN. And to generate UPI PIN you would have to go through your debit card.’

Further, I asked him why is there any other option not available? He replied that on account of unavailability of any other easier option for the authentication, the NPCI has selected the debit card option.

He told me that debit card is necessary to authenticate the account holder when he links his account with the UPI App.

Thus again I realized that without the debit card I can not generate UPI PIN.

4. Setting UPI PIN through the UPI App

At last, I tried through the UPI enabled app itself because I did not want to leave any means. For this, I have chosen the PhonePe app. Thus let us see how I tried-

Step 1,

Open the PhonePe app. Visit My Money option at the bottom of the home screen.

Step 2,

Tap on the UPI Bank Accounts option under the Payment Methods heading.

Step 3,

On the Bank Accounts page, you can see the saved bank accounts. Here you can see the RESET BHIM UPI PIN tab.

As I have already BHIM UPI PIN, so it shows me the reset tab. But if you are setting the UPI PIN very first time, it shows you tab Set the UPI PIN. Thus the procedure is completely the same for setting or resetting the UPI PIN.

Therefore, tap on the tab to set/ reset the UPI PIN.

Step 4,

Now you can see a window to enter your Debit Card details. Thus you have none of the second option to set UPI PIN. Here you would have to enter the last 6 digits and expiry date of your debit card.

Then click on Continue.

Step 5,

Just you click on continue, you receive an OTP on your mobile number. Enter the OTP on the UPI PIN page for the validation. Then enter a 4 or 6 digit code and reenter that code.

Now you have set or reset the UPI PIN.

Thus you can see that there is no other option to authenticate the user for the UPI PIN except the debit card. That’s why the debit card is mandatory to set the UPI PIN.

5. A Trick To Set UPI PIN Without the Debit Card

Finally, I have used a trick to set UPI PIN without the debit card. It is a not a 100% working method but most of the people can use it and achieve their goals.

If you are not owning the debit card because of the charges, there is solution to this problem. You have to get debit card issued once. As you get the debit card, use it for setting the UPI PIN.

Once you set the UPI PIN, you can block your debit card. You can do it online or by contacting the customer care. There would not be any charge on the blocked card.

This method can be also used if you are avoiding the card for security reasons. Set the UPI PIN and block the card forever.

Note, you should always remember the UPI PIN. Because if you forget the UPI PIN, debit card would be necessary to reset the PIN.

However, you can reset your UPI PIN by using the existing UPI PIN. It does not require the debit card details.
