10 Rules about FASTag

By Chandrakant Mishra | Published On December 2, 2019

As you know FASTag lets you pass Toll Plaza without halting. The Electronic reader identifies your FASTag from a distance and charges the toll amount from your bank account. In this article, I will tell you 10 Rules of FASTag.

1. Separate FASTags for Separate Vehicles

A FASTag is assigned to a specific vehicle. So, you can not transfer it from one vehicle to another.

It means you can not use a single FASTag for more than one vehicles. If you do so, the FASTag will be blacklisted. So, you have to buy multiple FASTags for multiple vehicles you own.

Also, you can not buy two FASTags for one vehicle. It is strictly prohibited. But, you can buy the second FASTag, if you have lost the first.

2. KYC is Necessary for FASTag

To buy a FASTag, you have to go through the KYC process, be it partial or full. If you are buying it through the bank or wallet, your KYC should be completed there.

Or if you are buying through the POS on toll plazas and petrol pumps, you have to submit your KYC details with the RC of the vehicle on the spot.

Note:- With partial KYC, you can put maximum amount ₹20,000 in FASTag account. And with full KYC, this limit exceeds up to ₹1 lakh.

3. Validity of FASTag

According to the new rules, the validity of FASTag is for 5 years. After purchase, you only need to recharge your tag as per requirement. And after 5 years, you have to renew it.

4. Minimum Balance

No matter, from where you are buying the FASTag, you have to maintain a minimum balance in FASTag account. The toll charges will be deducted from your linked bank account or wallet. If there is no balance in your account or wallet, then only charges will be deducted from FASTag balance.

Moreover, if sufficient balance is neither in bank account/ wallet nor in FASTag account, your FASTag may be blacklisted. If you have not linked any account with FASTag, you have to keep a tab on FASTag balance.

Note:- You get an SMS of toll charging after every transaction. Also, you get an intimation of low balance. Moreover, you can view the correct charging and other details on the website www.nhtis.org.

5. Double Toll Charge

As you know if you have not FASTag and you wrongly enter in FASTag lane, you have to pay a double toll charge. Now, this rule is starting from 16 December 2019.

But, if you enter in a hybrid lane, you have to pay the charge as before.

6. Already have a FASTag

If you have a FASTag earlier to this Government Scheme, you can use it further as well. But that tag must be Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) enabled. Because other types of tags will not work on FASTag lane.

7. The Vehicle is Not in Your Name

You want to buy FASTag for the vehicle which is not in your name, you can do it. If you have completed KYC in your bank account or wallet, you can buy online FASTag for the vehicle which is in the name of your parents.

Moreover, you can buy for the outsiders as well. And there is no requirement of KYC papers of the vehicle owner. But remember, the toll charges will be deducted from your account. Because your account is linked with that FASTag.

8. FASTag Reader is Not Working

If the tag reader is not working properly at toll plaza and your FASTag is not readable, then you can pay the toll charges in cash.

But do you know, there is a clear guideline of the Government? According to the National Highway Fee Rules, you need not pay any toll in this situation. Moreover, you will be provided with a Zero Fee Receipt.

9. When You have to Contact with Issuer Agency

There may be some conditions when you have to contact with your FASTag issuer agency. It may be your bank, POS centre or wallet company. The conditions are-

Change of Address

If you change your city or residential address, you have to inform the FASTag issuer agency. The agency may ask you to submit the new KYC. So that it may be updated in records.

FASTag is Damaged

If your FASTag gets damaged for any reason, you need to inform the agency. The agency will replace it with a new one.

FASTag is Lost

If you have lost your FASTag then what will happen with the balance? You have to inform the agency to block your lost FASTag. Once you get a new FASTag, the old balance will be transferred in new FASTag account.

The Vehicle is Lost or Sold/ Transferred

In this case also you have to inform the issuer agency. The agency will block your FASTag. The balance in FASTag account will be safe for the new FASTag account.

Incorrect Toll is Deducted

If you have a doubt of wrong toll deduction, firstly contact to the issuer agency. The agency will review your request and take necessary action. If it finds your complaint is correct, the refund will be credited into your FASTag account.

10. Grievance Redressal

If you face any issue with your FASTag. Like not working or wrongly deduction of toll charges or any other, you have to follow the complaint procedure. This is-

  • Firstly, contact to Issuer Agency through the toll free number. Like, ICICI Bank FASTag toll free number is 1860 267 0104. Same as Paytm FASTag toll free number is 1800 102 6480. You may find this number on your FASTag.
  • If you are not satisfied with the resolution, Indian Highways Management Co. Ltd. (IHMCL) is the next level. Its website address is www.ihmcl.com. Or you may call 1033. It is a national toll free number of NHAI. Moreover, you may complain through My FASTag App.
